JULY 2019 • FOGHORN 35 GREENNEWS SW/TCH Maritime Funds the Construction of the Nation’s First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Zero-Emissions Ferry in the US New PVAAssociate SW/TCH Maritime (SW/TCH), an impact investment platform building the first fleet of zero-emissions maritime vessels in the U.S., announced its in- vestment to construct and own the Water- Go-Round ferry in collaboration with PVA Associate Golden Gate Zero Emission Marine (GGZEM), a provider of turn-key maritime hydrogen fuel cell power systems, and other partners (see box on page 36 for a complete list) . The 84-passenger ferry is currently under construction at the PVA Associate Member Bay Ship & Yacht shipyard in Alameda, CA using private funding from SW/TCH and a $3 million grant from the CaliforniaAir Resources Board (CARB) through the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (Air District), the admin- istrator of the grant. The $3 million grant comes from California engine. While the new engine lost three or four knots, as compared to the original engine’s speed, the Starship can still meet its schedule,” said Sisco. Testing included working with representatives from all of the systems affected by the repower, according to Bombard. Schedule-saving Technology Repowering the existing vessels with continuous rated, lower horsepower engines versus the higher horsepower, intermittent rated engines allows the captain to run the engine point at full throttle continu- ously without any adverse effect to the engine – con- tinuous rated engines are designed specifically for this. Catalina Express’s maintenance department has also noticed improvements in the engines’ extended maintenance schedule—and decreased maintenance costs—due to the new engine’s built-in oil filter. “We save quite a bit of money,” said Tony Ross, Vice President, Vessel Engineering, Catalina Express. Due to the reduced emissions, fuel efficiency, and environmental sensitivity, Catalina Express’ new MTU engines are making the operation greener while also saving on operating costs. n CONTINUED ON PAGE 36 Water-Go-Round Introducing Thrusters Stabilizers Get-home Drives Reversing Autopilot Pump Power Assist Steering Power Assist Power Assist Power Assist Highly Configurable Vessel System Monitoring & SMART Alarm Device +1 (604) 572-3935 • Surrey, BC, Canada • www.kobelt.com KOBELT MANUFACTURING CO.
