Fernstrum & Company is an ISO 9001:2015 Certified Company A few years back when PVA undertook the task of looking at the issue of sharing the waterways, two areas of concern im- mediately jumped out and have been the foundation of our efforts to improve safety on our waterways. Congested Waterways The first area of concern was that our waterways were getting crowded. As more and more people seek rec- reation in and along the nation’s waterways, including working water- fronts, more pressure will be placed on commercial operators to do what is necessary to avoid collisions and other incidents that could cause harm to rec- reational boaters. It is only through the skill of our licensed mariners that there have not been more incidents of recreational boater casualties. In fact, when we asked the U.S. Coast Guard to provide statistics at a Quality Partnership meeting last year, you could count the number of incidents on one hand. We hear anecdotally that the problem is getting worse and that companies have altered published schedules and sometimes have had to make adjustments mid excursion due to congestion or the actions of recre- ational boats. Engagement with local Coast Guard units and through Harbor Safety Committees has yielded some
