JULY 2019 • FOGHORN 15 FOGHORNFOCUS: ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES FOGHORN: How many vessels does Maid of the Mist operate? Christopher M. Glynn: Maid of the Mist has been navigating the waters of the Niagara River since 1846 with a twin-stack sidewheel steamboat. In 1885, Maid of the Mist boats transitioned to single-stack steamers that ventured closer to the Horseshoe Falls than any boat ever had before. In 1955, the first modern Maid of the Mist boat entered the river, made of steel and powered by twin diesel engines. Today, Maid of the Mist VI and VIII are powered by twin Volvo Penta D13MH engines with Twin Disc MG 5114 transmissions. [Editor’s Note: Both Volvo Penta and Twin Disc are PV A Associate members.] What can you tell us about your operation? Maid of the Mist, one of North America’s oldest tourist attractions, operates from mid to late spring through to the first week of November, with boats departing for the base of Niagara Falls every 30 minutes, with an estimated 1.6 million guests on board annually. Why are you choosing to move to electric propulsion? It makes perfect sense for Maid of the Mist to be a world leader with the implementation of this green technology. Our new vessels will carry our guests to the base of Niagara Falls, one of the world’s largest sources of clean hydroelectric power. Q&A with Christopher Glynn: Maid of the Mist Goes Electric IMPROVE YOUR OPERATIONS Our ACTIVE interceptor system lowers roll and slamming by up to 50%. It also reduces resistance. That means lower fuel consumption and less CO² emissions. Easy to install, easy to operate. Premium technology at affordable pricing. Made of composite materials for corrosion resistance and optimum performance, Humphree Interceptor tabs are electric powered (12 or 24 volt) and made for a clean transom installation with no aft overhang to contend with around docks or gear. FOGHORN had an opportunity to learn about an iconic vessel operation and PVA member, Maid of the Mist, from its president Christopher M. Glynn and Edward Schwarz Senior VP of Sales, ABB Marine & Ports of PVA Associate member ABB about the launch of two new, all-electric catamarans. The vessel modules are being constructed by PVA Associate member Burger Boat Company, Manitowoc, WI and will be assembled onsite in Niagara Falls. The emissions-free vessels will be placed in service later this year. Christopher M. Glynn
