This award is named in honor of PVA Past President Roger Murphy, the founder of the PVA Safety and Security Committee and is given to a deserving employee of a PVA member, as recog- nition for demonstrating, enhancing or contributing to the overall safety of their company or organization and the passenger vessel industry. Well known around the harbor, Johnny has a reputation for doing things right and acting proactively in regards to safety. He has also been teaching younger mariners the correct procedures to ensure that no one gets hurt. Said Kelly: “He is a safety filter through which your work will be assessed, regardless if it is deemed critical or superficial. It’s all the same to Johnny; Do it right!” It is through the diligence of one stalwart individual who has insisted on constancy that has created and maintained a strong safety culture on the vessel, shoreside, and on the docks that motivates others around him to pay close attention to their duties and follow his example. “It is his attention to detail and desire do the job the right way, that most characterizes Johnny,” Kelly said. “His many years of experience and authentic caring for the safety of others can be overlooked by the reliability of seeing, and hearing, him on the docks every day.” Island Packers is an excursion operation that carries passengers from Ventura, in Southern California, to the Channel Island National Park. The operation also offers whale watching and other marine wildlife viewing cruises.
