From small tour boats to large overnight riverboats, a number of new vessels have joined the U.S. fl eet this year. With ridership rising, passengers will be commuting and traveling in comfort with more amenities than ever and the latest technologies powering vessels.Heres a look at some of the vessels that PVA members delivered in 2021. VESSEL:Sea ChangeTYPE:Passenger FerryOPERATOR: SWITCH Maritime Sea ChangeSHIPBUILDER:All American Marine, Bellingham, Wash.AllAmericanMarineandvesselownerSWITCH Maritime announcedthe SeaChange,a70-foot, 75-passenger,zero-emissions,hydrogenfuelcell-powered, electric-drive ferry that will operate in the California Bay Area. Thiswillbethefi hydrogenfuelcellvesselinrst theU.S.,representingamonumentalstepinthe U.S. maritime industrys transition to a sustainablefuture. The ferry was developed and constructed to demonstrate a pathway to commercialization for zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell marine technologies. In October 2021, regulatory approval was given by the U.S. Coast Guard of the hydrogen powertrain and storage systems onboard the vessel. The completed ferrywillexhibittheviabilityofthiszero-carbon shippropulsiontechnologyforthecommercial and regulatory communities. The fi fueling wasrst successfullycompletedonNov.18andthevesselnal is beginning its fi sea trials before delivery. Sea Changeis set to start operations in fi rst quarter 2022.BAESystemsprovideditsHybriGenPowerand Propulsion solutiontoZeroEmissionIndustries, formerly Golden Gate Zero Emission Marine, for integration on the Sea Change. The hydrogen fuelcell power package comprises 360 kW of Cummins fuel cells and Hexagon hydrogen storage tanks with a capacity of 246 kg.
