b'GREEN NEWSRolls-Royce to Release mtu Marine Engines GREEN NEWSfor Sustainable Fuels R olls-Royce has received approval of its Series 2000 and Series 4000 mtu ma-rine diesel engines for use with sustain-able fuels. Rolls Royce Solutions America, Inc. mtu Branded Products is a member of PVA. Followingsuccessfulbenchandfieldtests, the Rolls-Royce business unit Power Systems will gradually be approving its Series 2000 and Series 4000 mtu marine engines for EN15940 synthetic diesel fuels from the beginning of 2023. These fuels include the sustainable fuels: BtL (biomass to liquid); HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil/renewable diesel); and PtL (pow-er to liquid), such as e-diesel. They can replace conventionaldieselfuelwithoutanyadjust-ments in these engines. The company pledged last year to prove that the Series 2000 and Series 4000 can be used with sustainable fuels. Golden Gate Ferry has been using HVO (renewable diesel) in six of its ferries since 2019. There is already a lot of interest now from many customers in the marine industry who want to improve their carbon footprint, partic- itasanadmixtureorreplaceitcompletely.CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent compared ularly with HVO, explained Denise Kurtulus,The benefits of HVO are clean combustionto fossil diesel. The engines are used, for example, in ferries, work-boats, and large yachts.Since 2019, we have been successfully testing the use of HVO with mtu engines in six ferries in our fleet, stated Jim Swindler, general man-ager of Golden Gate Ferry, a PVA member. The tests in over 41,000 operating hours confirmed, that when HVO is used, mtu engines performDIGITAL SHIPBUILDERSas well as diesel in terms of maximum power, load acceptance, and fuel consumption.
